Several common connection methods for PE water supply pipes

Time:2019-09-18 10:33:37

There are many connection methods between polyethylene pipes, PE pipes, pipes and fittings, as well as between polyethylene pipes and metal pipes. Each connection method has its own advantages and limitations. Users can choose the appropriate connection method based on the pipe diameter, working pressure, and usage environment. The most commonly used connection methods for urban water supply polyethylene pipelines include hot melt connection, electric melt connection, socket flexible connection, flange connection, steel plastic transition joint connection, etc.

1. Hot melt connection

Hot melt connection is the process of using a specialized heating tool to heat the part of a polyethylene pipe or fitting to be connected under pressure, causing it to melt. After that, the heating tool is removed, and pressure is applied to connect the two molten surfaces together. The two surfaces are kept under stable pressure for a period of time until the joint cools down. Hot melt connections include hot melt butt connections, hot melt socket connections, and hot melt saddle connections.

2. Electric fusion connection

Electric fusion connection is the process of using a specialized electric fusion fitting with an embedded resistance wire to tightly contact and energize the connection part of a PE pipe or fitting. The PE pipe heats the connection part through the embedded resistance wire, melting it together until the joint cools down. Electrofusion connection can be used to connect polyethylene pipes or socket fittings of different types and melt flow rates. Electric fusion connection is divided into electric fusion socket connection and electric fusion saddle type connection.

3. Socket type flexible connection

The socket flexible connection of polyethylene pipes is a new type of connection method developed based on the socket flexible connection principle of cast iron pipes and polyvinyl chloride pipes (PVC-U). PE pipes are welded with a reinforced polyethylene socket at one end of the polyethylene pipe. Socket type flexible connection is the process of directly inserting one end of a polyethylene pipe into a specially designed socket of the pipe or fitting, and using a locking ring inside the socket to tighten and resist pulling, as well as a rubber sealing ring to seal and connect PE pipes and fittings.

4. Flange connection

The flange connection is mainly used for connecting polyethylene pipes with metal pipes or valves, flow meters, pressure gauges and other ancillary equipment. The flange connection mainly consists of polyethylene flange connectors, steel or aluminum backpressure loop flanges, steel or aluminum flange plates, gaskets or sealing rings, bolts, nuts, etc. Flange connection is achieved by tightening bolts and nuts to ensure close contact between the flange connector and the flange plate.

5. Steel plastic transition joint connection

Steel plastic transition joint connection is the use of prefabricated steel plastic transition joints through cold pressing or other methods to connect polyethylene pipes and metal pipes. The steel plastic transition joint is equipped with anti pull locking rings and sealing rings, which usually require good sealing performance and anti pull and pressure resistance compared to polyethylene pipes in the system.

The above is the connection method for PE pipes. It should be noted that it is strictly prohibited to directly thread polyethylene pipes and fittings in any form, and threaded connections should be used; It is strictly prohibited to use open flames to bake polyethylene pipes and fittings, and to connect them directly.

Today, the connection technology of polyethylene has become very mature and reliable. Statistics show that the leakage rate of polyethylene pipes is less than two-thirds of 100000, far lower than 2-3% of ductile iron pipes, greatly improving the safety and economic benefits of pipelines. This is also a very important reason for the frequent use of polyethylene pipes in gas pipelines.
